Matrimonial fraud is real and follows a small number of patterns. How to recognise them, what a genuine profile looks like, and what to verify before anything is shared.
Most people you meet through a matrimonial service are exactly who they say they are. A small number are not, and they follow patterns that are easy to recognise once you know them.
The patterns to know
- Moving off the service immediately. A genuine family is content to talk within the service at first. Someone who insists within two messages on WhatsApp and nowhere else is avoiding the review process.
- A story that raises the stakes fast. Declarations of feeling within days, talk of marriage before the families have met, pressure to decide quickly.
- Any request for money. For a visa, a customs charge on a gift, a medical emergency, a business difficulty. There is no version of this that is genuine. None.
- Never able to meet or to be on video. A camera that never works, a leave that keeps getting cancelled, a parent who is always unavailable.
- Vagueness about the parish. A Kerala Catholic family can name its parish, its priest and its diocese without hesitation. Someone who cannot is the exception worth examining.
What to verify, and how
The parish is the strongest check available to a Kerala Catholic family, and it costs nothing. Ask which parish, then ring it. Priests are used to the question and will confirm that a family is known to them.
Beyond that: a video call early, a meeting between the families before anything is settled, and an employer that can be named and looked up.

What to hold back
Your address, your workplace address, your bank details, your ID documents and photographs of your home should not be shared with someone you have not met. Nothing legitimate requires them at the enquiry stage.
Report it
