Kerala Christian Wedding Budget: Planning a Simple, Meaningful Wedding

Where the money in a Kerala Christian wedding actually goes, which costs can be cut without anyone noticing, and why the Church has been asking families to keep weddings simple.

Kerala weddings have grown steadily larger, and Christian weddings are no exception: more guests, bigger halls, more gold, more photographs. Families often borrow to keep up, and start a new marriage with a debt that both households feel for years. Bishops in Kerala have repeatedly urged simpler celebrations, and many young couples now want the same.

Where the money goes

For a typical Kerala Christian wedding, the largest costs are usually:

  1. The reception: venue, food and decoration, usually the biggest single item, driven by the guest list.
  2. Gold and jewellery, often the largest cost for the bride's family.
  3. Clothing: the bridal saree, the manthrakodi, the groom's attire and outfits for the family.
  4. Photography and video, which has become a significant cost of its own.
  5. Church and parish: generally modest. Contributions, choir, flowers.

The one number that changes everything: the guest list

Almost every cost in a wedding scales with the number of guests. Cutting the list from 1,500 to 600 does more than any amount of bargaining with caterers. Agree on the number between the two families first, then plan everything else around it.

Savings nobody will notice

  • Hold the reception in the parish hall, if the parish has one. Usually far cheaper than a private venue, and close to the church.
  • A weekday wedding. Halls and caterers are often cheaper outside the Saturday and Sunday rush.
  • One good photographer rather than a full film crew.
  • Simpler decoration. The church does not need to be redecorated. It is already beautiful.
  • A single combined event instead of separate parties for each family.

Gold, gifts and dowry

The question of gold is where wedding budgets and conscience meet. Dowry is illegal in India, and the Church in Kerala has spoken against it plainly. Our article on dowry and the Catholic conscience in Kerala looks at this honestly. A couple who agree on it before the families negotiate are in a far stronger position.

What to protect

Spend on what matters to you: the Mass, the music, a meal your grandparents will enjoy. A wedding is one day; the marriage is the rest of your life. Money not spent on the day is money for a home, for education, or for a calmer first year together.
