Dowry and the Catholic Conscience in Kerala

Dowry is illegal in India and rejected by the Church, yet the practice persists under other names. What the bishops have said, and what a family can actually do about it.

Dowry has been illegal in India since 1961. The Catholic Church in Kerala has spoken against it repeatedly and plainly. And yet it persists, renamed — as "gifts", as "what we are giving our daughter", as gold that everyone understands to be expected.

What the Church has said

The Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council has condemned the practice for decades, and individual dioceses have gone further, with pastoral letters and in some cases parish-level pledges against demanding or giving dowry. The reasoning is not merely legal. A marriage is a covenant between two baptised persons; a transaction attached to it makes the bride a party to a price.

Why it survives

Honesty helps here. Dowry survives because it is rarely demanded outright. It survives in the question about what the girl's family will "do for them", in the assumption that a groom abroad is worth more, and in the silence of families who dislike it but will not be the first to refuse.

It also survives because gold in Kerala genuinely is a form of security a family gives a daughter. The line between a gift to her and a payment to his family is one that gets deliberately blurred.

What a family can actually do

  • Say it at the first conversation. Not the fourth. A family that intends to ask will usually withdraw quietly when told at the start that nothing will be given.
  • Distinguish clearly between a gift to your daughter and a payment to a household. Gold given to her, in her name, held by her, is a different thing entirely.
  • Involve the parish priest. Many are willing to say to the other family what you would find hard to say yourself.
  • Be prepared to walk away. This is the only step that actually works, and every family that has taken it says the same thing afterwards: the match was not worth having.

A word to grooms and their parents

The practice ends when the receiving side refuses. A groom who tells his own parents that nothing is to be asked for has done more than any campaign. It is, in the plainest sense, the Christian position.

We do not ask about dowry anywhere on this service and never will. What our profiles record is rite, diocese, parish, education and work — the things two families actually need in order to judge a match.
