St Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception

She was born Annakutty Muttathupadathu at Kudamaloor in 1910, into a Syro-Malabar family of the Kottayam region. Her mother died within months of her birth, and she was raised by an aunt whose discipline was strict. From childhood she wished to enter religious life, and family plans for her marriage stood in the way.

The turning point came at fourteen. Rather than accept a betrothal, she deliberately stepped into a pit of burning chaff, injuring her foot badly enough that marriage was no longer proposed. She later spoke of it plainly as the price of the life she wanted. In 1927 she entered the Franciscan Clarist Congregation at Bharananganam and took the name Alphonsa, after St Alphonsus Liguori.

Her adult life was almost continuously ill. She taught briefly, then spent years in and out of sickness with fevers, pneumonia and a long digestive illness that left her unable to keep food down. She made no display of it. The accounts from her community describe someone who asked for nothing, prayed steadily, and treated her illness as her particular work rather than an interruption of it.

She died on 28 July 1946, aged thirty-five. Devotion at her tomb began almost at once, first among the schoolchildren of Bharananganam, then far more widely. Pope John Paul II beatified her at Kottayam in 1986, and Pope Benedict XVI canonised her in Rome on 12 October 2008, the first woman of Indian origin to be declared a saint.

Her shrine at Bharananganam remains one of the most visited pilgrim sites in Kerala, particularly around her feast on 28 July.
