The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church celebrates marriage in the West Syriac tradition — the crowning, the blessing of the rings and the joining of hands, and what each signifies.
The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church entered full communion with Rome in 1930, under Archbishop Geevarghese Mar Ivanios, bringing with it the West Syriac liturgical tradition of Antioch. Its marriage rite is among the most visually distinctive in the Catholic world.
Two ceremonies in one
The Malankara marriage service is made up of two connected rites, celebrated one after the other.
The blessing of the rings comes first. The rings are blessed and exchanged, and the prayers speak of betrothal — of the promise given before it is fulfilled. In an older practice this was a separate service held earlier; today it is normally joined to the wedding itself.
The crowning follows. Crowns are blessed and placed on the heads of the bride and the groom. The imagery is of the couple as king and queen of the household they are founding, and of the martyr's crown — a reminder that marriage asks for self-denial. In the Antiochene understanding, the crowning is the heart of the sacrament.
The joining of hands
The priest joins the right hands of the couple and binds them, and they process together around the altar. The ceremony ends with the removal of the crowns and a final blessing of the household.
The community today
The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church is headed by its Major Archbishop-Catholicos in Thiruvananthapuram, which remains the community's centre. There are eparchies across Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and beyond India an exarchate in the United States and growing communities in the Gulf, Canada, Europe and Australia.
