Kerala's Latin Catholic community runs along the coast, from Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam through Alappuzha and Kochi up to Kozhikode and Kannur. It is one of the oldest Christian populations in India, and its weddings have a character quite distinct from the Syro-Malabar celebrations inland.
The Roman Rite, celebrated locally
Latin Catholics follow the Roman Rite, the same liturgy used in Rome and across most of the Catholic world. The wedding takes place within Mass, with the exchange of consent, the blessing and exchange of rings, and the nuptial blessing.
What makes a coastal Kerala wedding its own thing is everything around the liturgy: the procession from the house to the church, the parish band, the decorated boats in the backwater villages, and a feast in which the whole parish rather than merely the invited guests tends to take part.
The parish at the centre
Coastal parishes are unusually tight-knit. Many are built around a single occupation — fishing, and the trades that depend on it — and the parish church is the centre of village life in a way that is less true inland. A wedding is a parish event.
