Where the community comes from
Knanaya tradition traces the community to a group of families who arrived at Kodungallur with Knai Thoma, Thomas of Cana, in the fourth century. Whatever the historical detail, the community has kept a continuous identity since, with its own songs, its own wedding customs and its own sense of descent.
Today Knanaya Catholics are served by the Archeparchy of Kottayam, whose jurisdiction is unusual: it follows the community rather than a territory, so a Knanaya family in Chicago or Dubai still belongs to Kottayam.
The custom of endogamy
Marrying within the community is the practice that has preserved that identity. It is a custom, not a doctrine — the Church does not require it and does not forbid marrying outside — but it is deeply held, and families searching for a Knanaya match usually have it in mind from the first conversation.
It is worth being direct about this early. A family that intends to marry within the community and a family that does not will not find common ground later, and both are better served by knowing at the start.
Ceremonies particular to a Knanaya wedding
- Chandam charthal — the ceremonial grooming of the bridegroom on the eve of the wedding, accompanied by the community's own songs.
- Ichappad — the ritual in which the couple are fed by their families, a gesture of provision and of parting.
- Nellum neerum — the welcome of the couple at the groom's home with paddy and water, a blessing on the household they are joining.
- Vazhu pidichu kanikkal — the couple seek and receive the blessing of their elders.
The Knanaya wedding songs, the panapattu and the margamkali, are sung at these occasions and are among the oldest surviving Christian folk traditions in India.
