Horoscopes, Discernment and What the Catholic Church Actually Teaches

Horoscope matching is common in Kerala, including among Christian families. What the Church teaches about astrology, and what Catholic discernment offers instead.

Ask around in Kerala and you will find Christian families who quietly have a horoscope checked before agreeing to a match. It is worth being clear about what the Church teaches, and about what it offers in place of it.

What the Church says

The Catechism is direct. Under the first commandment it lists "consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots" among practices that "contradict the honour, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone." The reason is not that the Church thinks the stars are dangerous. It is that these practices treat the future as fixed and knowable, which denies both God's providence and our own freedom.

A marriage entered because a chart permitted it, or refused because a chart forbade it, rests the most consequential decision of two lives on something the Church says cannot bear that weight.

Why families do it anyway

Usually not out of conviction. Usually because the other family asked, or because an elder insists, or because it feels like one more reassurance before a decision that is frightening. The impulse behind it — wanting to know that this will be all right — is entirely understandable.

What the Church offers instead

Discernment is not a softer version of fortune-telling. It is a different activity altogether: not finding out what will happen, but working out what is right, and then committing to it.

  • Prayer, together and apart. Not asking for a sign, but asking for clarity and honesty.
  • Counsel. Parents, a parish priest, a spiritual director, an older married couple whose marriage you respect.
  • Plain examination. Do we want the same things? Do we pray? How does each of us behave when tired, embarrassed or contradicted?
  • The pre-marriage course, which most Kerala dioceses run and which is designed for exactly this.

If the other family insists

Some families will ask. You can decline courteously and explain why — most accept it without difficulty, and some are relieved. If it becomes a condition of the match, that itself is information: you have learned something about how decisions will be made in that household for the next forty years.
