What the Catholic Church Teaches About Family Planning: A Guide for Engaged Couples

Responsible parenthood, natural family planning and why the Church teaches what it does. A clear, non-technical introduction for Catholic couples preparing for marriage.

Family planning is one of the topics engaged couples are most likely to avoid and most likely to need. The pre-marriage course will touch on it, but many couples arrive unsure what the Church actually teaches, and why. This is a short, honest introduction.

Responsible parenthood

The Church does not ask couples to have as many children as possible. It speaks of responsible parenthood: a husband and wife, together and before God, discerning how many children they can welcome and raise well, considering their health, finances and circumstances. Spacing births, or postponing a pregnancy for serious reasons, is consistent with this.

Why the Church distinguishes methods

In Humanae Vitae (1968) and in later teaching, the Church holds that the two meanings of married love, the bond between husband and wife and openness to new life, belong together. For this reason it teaches that artificial contraception is not morally acceptable, while natural methods that work with the body's cycle of fertility are. The difference is not just technique. In one case the couple alter the act. In the other they choose when to come together.

Natural family planning

Modern natural family planning (NFP) is not the old "rhythm method". Methods such as the Billings Ovulation Method and the symptothermal method teach a woman to recognise the signs of fertility in her own cycle. Couples who learn properly from a trained instructor and follow the method carefully find it reliable. Many couples also say it improves communication, because both partners share responsibility.

Where to learn

Most Kerala dioceses have a family apostolate, often running NFP training alongside marriage preparation. Ask at your parish or at the pre-marriage course. Learning before the wedding is far easier than learning afterwards.

Talking about it as a couple

Agreement matters more than any method. Before the wedding, talk honestly about:

  • Whether you hope to have children soon, or wait for a time.
  • How many children you imagine having.
  • How each of you understands the Church's teaching.
  • Any health concerns that might affect pregnancy.

It can feel uncomfortable at first. It is far more uncomfortable to discover, a year into marriage, that you never really agreed.
