A Kerala Christian wedding is recognisable at a glance: the bride in white or cream silk with gold, a long veil, and later the deep-coloured manthrakodi saree. Behind those choices sit a few centuries of tradition, and a few practical decisions every bride's family has to make.
Older generations of St Thomas Christian women wore the chatta (a white, loose-sleeved blouse) and a mundu pleated at the back in a distinctive fan shape, with a kavani over the shoulder. Brides wore the finest version of this, often with gold borders. You will still see it at heritage-themed weddings and in old family photographs.
Most Kerala Christian brides now marry in a white, ivory or cream silk saree, usually with gold zari work, paired with a veil. Some choose a Western-style gown instead, particularly in the diaspora, and many parishes welcome both. A few practical points:
In Syro-Malabar and many other Kerala Christian weddings, the groom gives the bride a manthrakodi, a new saree blessed during the ceremony, as a sign that he will provide for her. It is often red, maroon or another rich colour, and the bride wears it for part of the celebration or soon afterwards. Our article on the minnu and the manthrakodi explains the ritual.
Most grooms wear a suit, often with a sherwani or bandhgala as an alternative. Some families choose the traditional white mundu and shirt for a heritage look, especially for the reception. Whatever the choice, it is worth coordinating colours with the bride's family.
The most important piece of jewellery at a Kerala Christian wedding is the smallest: the minnu, tied by the groom during the ceremony. Families often feel pressure to add a great deal more gold. It is worth deciding together, early, what is enough. See planning a simple, meaningful wedding.
