Catholic Marriage for Keralites in the Gulf: A Practical Guide

30 June 2026 · 2 min read

Hundreds of thousands of Kerala Catholics live and work in the Gulf, and most of them come home to marry. The wedding is in Kerala, the life afterwards is in Dubai, Doha or Kuwait City, and the paperwork has to serve both. Planning it in the right order saves a great deal of stress and leave.

1. Start with your home parish

Your marriage is prepared through your home parish in Kerala, where your baptism is recorded, even if you have lived abroad for years. Ask your family to contact the parish office early. You will typically need a recent baptism certificate (with marginal notes), a certificate of the pre-marriage course, and a letter of freedom to marry. If you have been active in a Gulf parish, a letter from your parish priest there can also help.

2. Do the pre-marriage course early

Many Gulf parishes, and many Kerala dioceses, run marriage preparation courses. Some are offered as short intensive programmes during the holiday season. Completing it in the Gulf before you fly home saves precious days of leave. Confirm with your home parish that the certificate will be accepted.

3. Plan your leave around the banns

Banns are usually read in both parishes on Sundays before the wedding. Your family can handle this while you are away, but the dates must be fixed well ahead. A realistic plan is: engagement on one visit, wedding on the next. Or, if leave is short, both within a single long leave, with the paperwork done in advance.

4. Register the marriage

A church wedding in Kerala should also be registered with the local body (panchayat, municipality or corporation) under the state's marriage registration rules. Do it before you fly back. A registered marriage certificate is what Gulf authorities and the Indian embassy will want to see.

5. Prepare for the spouse visa

Each Gulf country has its own rules on salary thresholds, attestation and sponsoring a spouse, and they change. In general, expect to need your marriage certificate attested in India (and then by the embassy of the country where you work), passports with the spouse's name endorsed where needed, and proof of salary and accommodation. Check the current requirements with your employer's HR team before the wedding, not after.

Finding a match while abroad

Gulf-based families often search for someone already working in the same country, or someone in Kerala willing to move. Our pages for the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia list approved profiles. For marriages further afield, see NRI Catholic marriage: visas, timelines and courtship across time zones.
